Who it’s for: Golfers who want a better-player’s distance iron or game-improvement club that offers more distance and forgiveness with enhanced feel.
What you should know: The updated P·790 has a new face that helps it deliver more ball speed, but with this version, TaylorMade is emphasizing enhanced feel and individually-tuned center of gravity locations in each club that optimizes performance.
The deep dive: For the last decade, the better-player’s distance iron category has been one of the hottest in golf, featuring clubs that look like they belong in the bag of local club champs and single-digit handicap golfers but hide distance-enhancing features and forgiveness levels that are often associated with game-improvement irons. TaylorMade’s P·790 was one of the earliest clubs that defined this category, and it has been the workhorse for the brand’s P-Series of irons since it was first released in 2017.
Today, TaylorMade released the fifth generation of P·790. While the cosmetics have changed and many of the internal technologies have been updated, the goal for the club remains the same: to be the Holy Grail of irons for TaylorMade. It aims to provide more distance, a high level of forgiveness and enhanced feel while looking like a club elite players might covet.

The most significant change made to the 2025 P·790 is the addition of a forged 4340M face plate. It is shaped like an L and wraps under the leading edge and into the sole, and in the 4-7 irons, it is complemented by a Speed Pocket slot to improve performance on low-struck shots. The real key, however, is the new material is 20 percent stronger than the stainless steel used in the 2023 P·790. That allowed TaylorMade to make the faces thinner, which resulted in more flexing at the moment of impact, enhanced ball speed and more ball speed protection on mishits. According to TaylorMade, the sweet spot in the updated P·790 is 24 percent larger than the sweet spot in the previous version.
Inside the head of each hollow-body P·790, TaylorMade has designed a different series of tungsten weights in the 4-7 iron and added stiffening bars.
The weights, which go up to 40 grams, are lower and more toward the heel in the long irons but get positioned progressively higher in the mid-irons. TaylorMade refers to this as FLTD CG and it encourages long irons to have a higher launch angle while making it easier for golfers to hit mid-irons lower for enhanced distance control on approach shots. There are no tungsten weights in the 8-iron, 9-iron, pitching wedge or attack wedge.
The bar structures stiffen the heads and allow TaylorMade engineers to tune the frequencies and sounds made at impact, like an instrument, for enhanced feel.
To further enhance sound and feel, TaylorMade injects SpeedFoam Air into the hollow chamber inside each head. The material does not inhibit the face from flexing or reduce ball speed, but it does help to soak up excessive vibrations.
In the address position, eagle-eyed golfers might notice TaylorMade has made the topline of the P·790 thinner. Designers also made the sole more curved from heel to toe and added beveling to the leading edge of the mid- and short irons. This should encourage impact slightly higher in the face, which results in a higher launch angle and more consistency while keeping the leading edge down on the long irons.
The lofts of the updated P·790 are modern but not excessively strong by today’s standard, with the 5-iron at 23 degrees, 9-iron at 38.5 degrees and pitching wedge at 44 degrees. A 49-degree attack wedge is also available. Those lofts are stronger than the lofts of the recently-released, smaller-sized P·770, but working with a custom fitter, golfers should be able to create a blended set and the new cosmetics of the P·790 are nearly identical to the 2024 P·770.
