Freshly renovated Feather Sound to host Skechers World Champions Cup
Feather Sound Country Club in Clearwater, Florida, will host the Skechers World Champions Cup supporting Shriners Children’s on Dec. 4, 5 and 7. The layout, designed by golf architect Joe Lee, opened in 1974 and was renovated by Kipp Schulties in 2022.
With a purse of $1.35 million and playing as an official PGA Tour-sanctioned event, the tournament features three teams of senior golfers representing the United States, Europe and an International squad.
The American side includes Jim Furyk (captain), Jason Caron, Stewart Cink, Jerry Kelly, Justin Leonard and Steve Stricker, with Steve Flesch and Bill Andrade as non-playing assistant captains. The European squad includes Darren Clarke (captain), Thomas Bjorn, Alex Cejka, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie, with Soren Kjeldsen and Jesper Parnevik as assistant captains. The International squad includes Mike Weir (captain), Steven Alker, Angel Cabrera, K.J. Choi, Mark Hensby and Y.E. Yang, with Ricardo Gonzalez and Charlie Wi as assistant captains.
The tournament uses a unique points-based team format, and all the competition will be on Feather Sound’s back nine. With a par of 36, the nine holes will max out at 3,526 yards for the event, with water in play repeatedly. Feather Sound sits just west of the Howard Franklin Bridge, which carries Interstate 275 between Tampa and St. Petersburg. The course plays near Tampa Bay and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport.
Feather Sound was in the news in 2024, as well. The private club hosted the Aramco Team Series – Tampa as part of the Ladies European Tour in 2024, with Alexandra Forsterling of Germany winning the individual title.
