Davis Love III's marching orders for Harbour Town restoration: 'Don't mess it up'
Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina is well known as the site of a long-running PGA Tour event as well as its tree-lined fairways, closing stretch alongside Calibogue Sound and, of course, that iconic red and white lighthouse behind the 18th green. Designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1969, it’s one of the most recognizable golf courses in the United States.
But like all golf courses, things had changed at Harbour Town over the decades. Greens shrank a bit, bunkers needs rebuilding and the fine lines needed sharpening. The operators of Sea Pines Resort planned upgrades to the course’s infrastructure, so they went ahead and commissioned a full restoration to one of the early courses that made Dye a familiar – and oftentimes feared – name to all serious golfers.
Tasked as a player-consultant for the restoration was Davis Love III, who won five PGA Tour events at Harbour Town. Founder of his own golf architecture company, Love had a main goal for Harbour Town: “Don’t mess it up.”
