Watch: J.J. Spaun's winning U.S. Open putt even brought a smile to Tyrrell Hatton's face
See, Tyrrell Hatton can smile, even when he's furious.
The Englishman is known for his stern temperament and angry reactions on the golf course, and after a bogey-bogey finish to place T-4, Hatton had every reason to be upset. About an hour earlier, he was tied for the lead at the 2025 U.S. Open. Instead, he had to try to explain to media how he came up just short.
That's when a genuine reaction happened. The crowd went insane in the background as Hatton was answering a question, and his eyes darted toward what looked like a TV screen to see what happened.
J.J. Spaun had just buried a 64-foot putt to win the U.S. Open.
"Oh, he's holed it," Hatton said. "Unbelievable."
That's when he cracked a smile.
"What a putt to win," he says to the media members speaking with him. That's incredible."
Then a media member asked Hatton what he thought Spaun was feeling in that moment, and his smile continued. "Shock," Hatton responded.
"I'm sad about how I finished, but I'm very happy for J.J., like to win a major in that fashion is amazing. You can't have -- certainly, I would hate for anyone to have any negativity towards that."
