PGA Tour looking to add CEO. What does that mean for Jay Monahan?

Updated Dec. 17, 2024, 2:10 p.m. ET

The PGA Tour is seeking a CEO.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan revealed in an email to staff and during a town hall meeting he hosted on Tuesday morning that it is launching a search for a CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises.

"We're bringing new perspectives onto our team to help us realize the incredible opportunities ahead for our sport, including launching a search for a CEO of the PGA Tour," he said in a video later released to fans.

Monahan will remain as commissioner, serve on the Tour’s policy board as a director, a first for a Tour commissioner, and partake in the search committee for the CEO.

Arthur Blank, the founder of Home Depot and owner of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and TGL’s Atlanta Drive, will lead the search committee as a member of the Tour Enterprises board. [He also serves as chair of the management development and compensation committee.] Others on the search committee include Enterprises Chair Joe Gorder, the CEO of Valero Oil whose company is title sponsor of the Valero Texas Open, Enterprises board director Sam Kennedy, CEO of Fenway Sports Group, as well as player directors Tiger Woods and Adam Scott.

“PGA Tour leadership has made significant progress this year in establishing PGA Tour Enterprises," said Gorder. "Our search for a CEO of the PGA Tour will build on that momentum and ensure we go further, faster in the new year. We’re grateful for Jay’s ongoing leadership  and excited to expand his role to include membership on the PGA Tour Policy Board.”

"Commissioner Monahan and the Board have been clear that they believe that recruiting a CEO for the PGA Tour is an important next step in helping PGA Tour Enterprises achieve its tremendous potential," said Adam Scott, a player director on the board and 14-time Tour winner. "I support their vision for bringing fresh perspective into the organization in this vital new role, and I am looking forward to serving on the search committee as the process unfolds."

The Tour also has engaged Korn Ferry, the overarching title of the Tour’s developmental circuit, to help in the external search.

Monahan initially had been named the CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises in march, but he noted in his email that he had pushed for the hiring of a CEO since the beginning of the year.

The CEO role will report directly to the PGA Tour Policy Board, as well as the board for Enterprises.

In other news, Monahan announced that Ron Price, the Tour’s COO, would be retiring at the end of the year after a 30-year tenure. His role is not expected to be filled. Price, who represented the Tour in front of Congress during questioning in 2023 during Monahan's health-related absence, was the second-highest paid staff member at the Tour, earning a total compensation package north of $13 million according to the Tour's 2023 Form 990.
