Wyndham Championship leaderboard, Round 1 scores: Joel Dahmen sizzles with 61 at Sedgefield

July 31, 2025Updated Aug. 1, 2025, 7:57 a.m. ET

Hard to believe but we have arrived at the final regular-season event on the PGA Tour's 2025 schedule. It's the Wyndham Championship, which will be played at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, once again.

Sedgefield, a 7,131 yard, par 70 Donald Ross golf course, is hosting the Wyndham for the 17th time. Originally opened in the 1920s, the course underwent a restoration in 2007. The course is tied for 183rd on the Golfweek's Best 2025: Top 200 Classic Courses in the U.S. list.

This week will see the 156-man field chasing a trophy and a payday but the tournament-within-the-tournament will be the race to make the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings. It's a new metric, as last year, the top 100 made the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Mark Hubbard makes it a four-way tie for third at 7 under at the Wyndham

Hubbard is having the best round in the afternoon wave, carding a 7-under 63 to forge a four-way tie for third.

Hubs opened with a pair of birdies, had another duo at holes 5 and 6. He then had three birdies on his back nine at Nos. 13, 15 and 16 as he went bogey free on the day.

Nicolai Hojgaard had the shot of the day at the 2025 Wyndham Championship

Joel Dahmen 'trending' after his 61 at Wyndham Championship

Joel Dahmen, who lost a heartbreaker in the Dominican Republic early this season after closing with three straight final-round bogeys, stormed his way around Sedgefield Country Club on Thursday.

Dahmen, who played the back nine first, made the turn in 3-under 32 before making six birdies over his final nine holes, including three straight, to shoot a second-nine 29 and sign for a 61.

"I don't know if you ever see 61 coming, but I saw good golf coming. I went 45-ish holes last week without a bogey to start the tournament, played really well in Truckee at the Barracuda besides kind of a weak Saturday," Dahmen said after his round. "If you take like four holes away last week, it was kind of going to be a top 5. Trending, as we like to say in golf, we're always trending, right, but we're actually trending, which is nice."

He rocketed into the lead at the Wyndham, and just as important, he vaulted up from No. 101 to No. 50 in the FedEx Cup Playoff standings. If that holds, he would get into both of the first two postseason events at the FedEx St. Jude Championship as well as the BMW Championship.

Joel Dahmen waits to putt on the ninth green during the first round of the 2025 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club.

Aaron Rai, Nico Echavarria post 63s to tie for lead; Adam Scott gets big round he needed

Cameron Young held the lead by himself for a while after his 63 but Aaron Rai matched it a while later. It wasn't much longer after that that Nico Echavarria shot a 63 of his own. These moves were all big for the FedEx Cup Playoff standings.

Other big movers up include Alex Noren, from way back in the field at No. 141 all the way to inside the top 70.

Cameron Young shoots 63, shoots up leaderboard at Wyndham

Is this the week Cameron Young finally breaks through? Long named as one of the winless PGA Tour pros who is likely to be the next to finally win, Young shot 7-under 63 on Thursday, a round in which he literally caught fire down the stretch.

Young had six birdies over his last seven holes, including five straight to close out his round, an eye-popping finish at Sedgefield Country Club.

Jordan Spieth's par on No. 18 was incredible

What else is there to say about the wild ride that Jordan Spieth seems to take around every golf course? On the 18th hole (his ninth of the day) during Thursday's opening round, the Texan made par, but it was anything but boring.

Spieth pulled his drive hard left into trees, then curled a second shot that barely caught some branches before settling into a bunker. After a solid sand shot, he curled a 14-footer into the cup for an amazing par on the 495-yard par-4.

Who's in the field for the 2025 Wyndham Championship?

Since the creation of the FedEx Cup in 2007, the Wyndham has been the final event of the FedEx Cup regular season. The field in 2025 is as strong as it's ever been – from Adam Scott to Jordan Spieth and fellow past major winner Hideki Matsuyama. Other big names include Tony Finau (60), Matt Fitzpatrick (43), Robert MacIntyre (15) and Keegan Bradley (10).

Who WD'd from Wyndham Championship?

Mackenzie Hughes' best finish in 2025 was a runner-up at the OneFlight Myrtle Beach Classic, where he came up short in a three-way playoff. The Canadian entered the week of the Wyndham in 59th in the FedEx Cup Playoff standings, pretty safely inside the top-70 cutoff for the three-tournament postseason that starts in Memphis in 10 days. There was no reason given for his withdrawal. PGA Tour rules stipulate that if golfers WD before an event starts, they're not required to provide a reason.

Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela celebrates after winning the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities on July 28, 2024 in Blaine, Minnesota.

Others who also withdrew were Jhonattan Vegas (No. 56), Jeremy Paul (No. 130) and Wyndham Clark (No. 50).

The field for the 2025 Wyndham Championship is as strong as it's ever been – from Adam Scott to Jordan Spieth and fellow past major winner Hideki Matsuyama.

Who's near the top 70 cutoff for the 2025 FedEx Cup Playoffs?

Rickie Fowler, who enters the week at No. 61, made the cut at the 3M Open so he likely will survive the cut off for the top 70 (see the standings here) but he still has work to do if he intends to move on to the second playoff event, the BMW Championship, which is limited to the top 50. Others near the 70 mark include:
