Golfweek golf instruction: Try this trick to master the 50-yard bunker shot

Updated Nov. 15, 2025, 12:06 p.m. ET

Greenside bunkers are traditionally easier for amateur golfers to execute from. When the distance increases you have to add more speed which results in less room for error.

Professional Long Driver Averee Dovsek demonstrates how to hit a 50-yard bunker shot with a 9-iron.

Using a 9-iron increases the consistency of this bunker shot because you don’t have to swing as hard as you would with a sand wedge. The 9-iron, being a less lofted club, increases the ball speed, creating a further ball flight with less effort.
