FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Rory McIlroy was furious.

The Northern Irishman glared and walked in the direction of the gallery lining the left side of the 15th hole at Bethpage Black on Saturday morning. He pointed at the crowd and asked a local police officer if he had identified the culprit who had yelled during the middle of the swing of Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, McIlroy’s foursomes partner.

“Did you see who did that?” a fired-up McIlroy asked.

But the rude spectator who deliberately tried to disturb Fleetwood’s concentration had managed to duck away without being caught.

“I don't mind them having a go at us. Like that's to be expected,” McIlroy said after winning the match over the American team of Collin Morikawa and Harris English 3 and 2. “I mean, that's what an away Ryder Cup is. Whenever they are still doing it while you are over the ball and trying to hit your shot, that's the tough thing.”

McIlroy remained upset and on the next hole his frustration boiled over.

“Shut the f-up,” he told the crowd.

Before his second shot at 16, he backed off his shot when a fan shouted at him again. The crowd booed him but boorish behavior by the partisan crowd didn’t disturb McIlroy. He stuffed his approach to 3 feet for the match-clinching birdie.

“You know, look, in between shots, say whatever you want to me. That's totally fine,” he said. “But give us the respect to let us hit shots, and give us the same chance that the Americans have, I guess.”

One day earlier, McIlroy was caught on video flipping the bird and he also blew a kiss to fans at the first tee after they cheered some choice words at him.
