The Players Championship has been contested since 1974, and through five decades of the event, there have been nine times where a Monday finish was required.
Originally called the Tournament Players Championship, it was first held at the end of August/beginning of September in 1974.
It moved to Colonial Country Club for Year 2. It also moved to a spring date, where it has stayed since.
The third rendition was played at Atlanta Country Club, which saw a Monday finish. In 1981, there was another Monday finish at Sawgrass Country Club.
Since the event moved to TPC Sawgrass in 1982, there have been six Monday finishes, the most recent in 2025. Priot to that, it had been 17 years since the PGA Tour's flagship event went to a fifth day.
Interesting tidbits about the Monday finishes at the Players:
- Jack Nicklaus came out on top in the first two Monday finishes
- J.C. Snead was the runner-up in the first two Monday finishes
- Both of Hal Sutton's Players wins came on a Monday (1983, 2000)
- Tiger Woods has been both a runner-up (2000) and a victor (2001) in a Players Monday
- The Rory McIlroy vs. J.J. Spaun Monday in 2025 was the first Monday playoff
