  • The FlightScope i4 laser rangefinder offers standard features like distance measurement, waterproofing, and a magnetic side for easy attachment to golf carts.
  • What sets the i4 apart is its Bluetooth connectivity, allowing it to pair with a smartphone app to provide environmental data like temperature, altitude, wind, and slope for more accurate distance calculations.
  • The i4 can also connect with FlightScope launch monitors or use the Smart Gapping AI Tool to provide personalized club recommendations based on a golfer's shot data.
  • While priced at $499, the FlightScope i4 offers a unique combination of detailed information and personalized insights for golfers looking to improve their game.

Laser rangefinders are becoming more sophisticated, with many devices now offering features beyond fast and accurate distance measurements. None offers more useful features than the new FlightScope i4.

On the outside, the i4 looks like several other units you have seen. It weighs just 180 grams, is waterproof, and has an internal battery that can be charged using a USB-C plug. The FlightScope i4 has 6X optical magnification, so objects appear clearly, and it can measure a target up to 1,000 yards away in as little as 0.05 seconds. It also features a powerful magnet on one side that allows you to affix the i4 to your golf cart or push cart. However, it is what you will see inside the viewfinder that sets this device apart.

The FlightScope i4 has Bluetooth, which allows it to connect to your smartphone and a free FlightScope app. Using the GPS feature in your phone, the FlightScope app can determine your location and gather information like air temperature, altitude, humidity, wind direction, and wind speed. The FlightScope i4 also has a Slope feature that measures how far up or down your target is in relation to your location. Using all that information, the unit displays the actual distance to your target, along with an ultra-detailed “effective playing distance.” FlightScope refers to this system as an Environmental Optimizer, and along with the Slope function, it can easily be disabled in tournament play.

In the view finder of the i4, golfers will see the actual distance to the flag, along with wind direection and speed, elevation changes, "plays like" yardages and club recommendations.

Armed with that information, most golfers would feel more confident in their club selection, but the FlightScope i4 can make that decision even easier. Golfers who have a FlightScope launch monitor can complete a Gapping Session – which requires players to hit five to 10 shots with each club in their bag – and after the session determines the average distance they hit them, that information is sent into the i4. So, along with seeing the effective playing distance, golfers will also see a club recommendation in the viewfinder that is based on their personal shot data.

Golfers who do not have access to a FlightScope launch monitor can add the club performance information they know to the app using the Smart Gapping AI Tool, which can then generate a report that can include carry distance and other information that should approximate their actual yardages. Armed with that information, the i4 can give solid personalized club recommendations.

Priced at $499, the FlightScope i4 is an investment, but few golf accessories match its level of detail or offer the promise of such personalized and useful information on the course.
