NCAA Women's Golf Regionals: Recaps, highlights from first round at every site
The women's college golf postseason is here, as Division I regionals kicked off Monday across the country at five sites, with the sixth having started Sunday because of weather.
The six regional championship sites feature 12 teams and six individuals (72 teams and 36 individuals, total), with play beginning on Monday, May 5 and ending Wednesday, May 7. The top five teams (30 total) and the top individual (6 total) not on a qualifying team from each regional will advance to the national championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, May 16-21.
Below you’ll find a recap, as well as a breakdown of what to watch for from each regional as the first round concludes from all six sites.
Recaps will be available once play concludes at each regional site.
Charlottesville Regional
Team leader: South Carolina, 7 under
Individual leaders: Louise Rydqvist, South Carolina; Paula Francisco, Florida; 4 under
The hook: Top-seeded South Carolina got off to an excellent start, as did UCLA, which snuck into regionals after barely making it via the .500 rule. There's a lot of separation from the Gamecocks to the cut line.
If the cut were today: 1. South Carolina, 2. UCLA, 3. Ole Miss, 4. Florida, 5. Virginia
What to watch for Tuesday: Whether teams like Charleston and UCF can play their way closer to the cutline after poor starts. The top five is pretty separated from a majority of the field, but there's a lot of golf left to be played.
Columbus Regional
Team leader: Ohio State, 9 under
Individual leader: Nellie Ong, Ohio State
The hook: The Buckeyes are cooking at home. A great start for the third-seeded team, with the top three seeds in those spots on the leaderboard. Kent State and UNLV are looking to play spoiler and in a good position after the opening day.
If the cut were today: 1. Ohio State, 2. Arkansas, 3. LSU, T-4. Kent State, UNLV
What to watch for Tuesday: The four-way tie for sixth that is two shots behind the cutline. Essentially, there are six teams fighting for four spots after the first two days. Who can separate on Tuesday?
Gold Canyon Regional
Team leader: Arizona State, 2 under
Individual leader: Anna Davis, Auburn; Davina Xahn, CSU Fullerton
The hook: The top-five teams are in the top-five spots, and there are eight shots separating fifth and sixth after the first round. Not a lot of craziness in the desert to begin.
If the cut were today: 1. Arizona State, 2. Oklahoma State, T-3. Auburn, Oregon, 5. Mississippi State
What to watch for Tuesday: Whether any of the teams outside of the top five can make a push. The deficit likely needs to be less than eight come Wednesday's final round, so who's going to make a move?
Lexington Regional
Team leader: Florida State, 7 under
Individual leader: Mirabel Ting, Florida State
The hook: New tournament, same Mirabel Ting. The junior at Florida State is the top-ranked player in the NCAA golf rankings, and for good reason. She's once again in pole position after the opening 18 holes and has Florida State seven shots in front of the competition.
If the cut were today: 1. Florida State, T-2. Georgia Southern, Kansas State, 4. USC, 5. TCU
What to watch for Tuesday: Vanderbilt is the only top-five seed outside of the cutline after the first day and is nine shots behind the fifth spot after the opening round. The Commodores need to position themselves in a better spot heading into the final round.
Lubbock Regional
Team leader: Wake Forest, 1 over
Individual leaders: Carolina Chacarra, Wake Forest; Lousiane Gauthier, Florida Gulf Coast
The hook: The Lubbock Regional first round finished Sunday, as teams competed in windy conditions to get a round in before storms hit West Texas on Monday. Wake Forest and Texas, the top-two seeds, got off to excellent starts and have distanced themselves on the field. However, the fourth and 10th spots are separated by only five shots after the opening round.
If the cut were today: 1. Wake Forest, 2. Texas, 3. Iowa State, T4. Tennessee, Arizona
What to watch for Tuesday: For Texas A&M to rebound. The fourth-seeded team is a shot behind Tennessee and Arizona after the opening round. The Aggies made only six birdies (and one eagle) as a team Sunday, a number that will surely improve in the second round.
Norman Regional
Team leader: Stanford, 12 under
Individual leaders: Andrea Revuelta, Stanford; Meja Ortengren, Stanford
The hook: Stanford is doing Stanford things in Norman, leading by 11 shots after the opening round. Because of anticipated weather Tuesday, the second round is being played Monday afternoon in Oklahoma. There's not a lot of separation for the rest of the pack, however.
If the cut were today: 1. Stanford, 2. Baylor, 3. Northwestern, T-4. Michigan State, North Carolina
What to watch for Tuesday: Duke found itself 12 shots behind the fifth spot after the first round. The Blue Devils have to shrink the gap in the afternoon.
