U.S. Open 2025 weather updates: Rain subsides third round's closing stretch

Updated June 14, 2025, 8:38 p.m. ET

Weather played a major factor Friday at the 2025 U.S. Open. Play was suspended with just five groups left on the golf course, as 13 players had to return to Oakmont on Saturday morning to finish up their second round before the third round got underway.

Unfortunately, Saturday's weather doesn't seem all too promising either, with storm chances throughout the day.

Rain subsides, weather clears up for third round closing stretch at the U.S. Open

After about an hour of pretty heavy rainfall, the skies have cleared up and the sun is out at Oakmont. The action was never suspended, but players certainly felt the effects of the adverse weather conditions.

On the flip side, the course is incredibly soft thanks to that round of rain and the storms that rolled through Friday night, so golfers are taking advantage of being able to take aim at the pin locations.

Rain falling at Oakmont but play continues in the third round of the U.S. Open

Heavy rain is falling off-and-on at Oakmont Country Club, but players are still out there, umbrellas and all. The radar shows spotty storms still in the area, but once this round of rain stops, it appears Oakmont will be in the clear for the remainder of the third round.

There are storms moving through western Pennsylvania again after a heavy soaking overnight Friday and into Saturday morning. As of 3:50 p.m. ET, players are continuing with their rounds as planned, but delays could be imminent as radar indicates thunderstorms canvassing the area to the north of the golf course.

Saturday's weather forecast for the 2025 U.S. Open third round

Players and fans can expect wet conditions Saturday morning. Storms linger from overnight Friday and the forecast calls for showers in the early hours of Saturday as the third round gets underway.

Unfortunately, the end of the morning wave doesn't mark the end of rain chances Saturday. Scattered thunderstorms are expected in the Pittsburgh area in the early evening, around 5 or 6 p.m.

Needless to say, don't be surprised if there is one or multiple delays in Saturday's third round.

Aside from the storms, the weather looks to be quite comfortable for players and attendees. High temperatures will be in the mid-70s with light winds from the southeast.

3 p.m. weather update: Line of storms could miss

The latest radar has a band of storms just missing Oakmont, which could mean the players will get the third round of action in before sundown.

Our Adam Schupak has his ear to the ground at Oakmont and he's hearing from sources at the course that getting through the third round of play might be difficult today. Lightning is a very good possibility between 3 and 5 p.m.

Ticketholders offered refunds for 'extremely wet' conditions

According to a story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, all fans who would prefer to avoid the soaked grounds of Oakmont Country Club on Saturday can get their money back.

Here's more from the story:

The USGA announced it is offering refunds for Saturday tickets due to the “extremely wet” conditions at Oakmont. Ticket holders received an email with information on the conditions and a link to request a refund. They have until Thursday to request it.

Though spectators are still able to attend and play is expected to continue, some areas of the course will be inaccessible to fans.

“While the golf course handled the weather incredibly well and playing conditions remain championship ready, some areas outside the ropes are very saturated,” the USGA said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of all spectators, access to certain viewing areas of the course will be limited throughout the day.

We want all ticket holders to be aware of these conditions prior to arriving on-site. If they choose not to attend under these circumstances, a full refund will be provided for their Saturday ticket.”

Just how wet is it? This video shows it's slick

The wet weather is making the greens more receptive but it also makes tees and fairways a little more difficult to manage. Here's a video the USGA just released, showing how slick and drenched the surface at Oakmont really is.

Ben Griffin on the rain: 'Bring it on'

It's refreshing to hear players say they don't mind the difficult course setup or less-than-optimal weather conditions. Consider Ben Griffin a mudder, as he's one who is eager to play on Saturday, even if it means working through a downpour.

Here's what Griffin said after the second round of play.

Flood watch issued north of Pittsburgh

How bad is the rain in the Pittsburgh area? The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch in the region, although it's north of Oakmont. Flash floods could take place throughout the region.
