THE RYDER CUP

Collin Morikawa calls Ryder Cup crowds tame so far, says 'I hope Friday is just absolute chaos'

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — It's just practice rounds, but early returns at Bethpage Black is the New York fans have been relatively quiet and easy going.

Collin Morikawa hopes that changes.

The 28-year-old is making his third start in the Ryder Cup this week, and he was asked about the fans during his press conference Wednesday afternoon, as most players have been leading up to Friday's opening session. However, Morikawa seemed a bit surprise at the crowd thus far.

"I'll be honest, I think it's kind of tame so far, Tuesday and Wednesday," he said. "I hope Friday is just absolute chaos. I'm all for it. I think it feeds into who we are and the American players and the American team. We want it. Like we want to use that to our advantage."

Chaos is likely to come, but not until Friday when the competition officially kicks off. Thursday is looking like a possible washout, with showers and storms forecasted throughout the day, so the first time the fans may get to unleash is Friday. And Morikawa hopes they live up to the hype.

Sam Burns and Collin Morikawa of Team United States celebrate on the 12th green during the Saturday afternoon fourball matches of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf Club on September 30, 2023 in Rome, Italy.

"I think every sport uses their home crowd to their advantage, and just because we don't play in a setting like this doesn't mean the craziness of New York and the rest of the country that people are traveling in from, it doesn't mean that we can't use that to our advantage," Morikawa said. "I think we really have to tap into that. I hope they come strong."

Many of the U.S. players have competed in team competitions before and have been demonstrative in feeding off the crowd and using it to their advantage.

Who on the U.S. team does Morikawa want to see unleash a little bit this week?

"I would love to see Cam Young just throw a massive fist pump in someone's face," Morikawa said. "I would love it. I mean, home state, home crowd, red, white and blue, played on the Junior Ryder Cup.

"He's a fiery competitor. I've known Cam for a long time. He's been very stoic, right. We're deep competitors. Whether you see that or not through the TV or through watching us play, he wants to whoop some butt. Yeah, I would love to see a nice little putter raise, undercut, fist-pump."
